Research and development of new generation high-voltage high-frequency vacuum capacitors with digital control of the capacitance

Abstract

Vacuum capacitors with variable capacitance found wide application in radio devices of long-wave, medium-wave and short-wave bands, in various powerful high-frequency generators, in VHF radio location systems etc.
The capacitance is changed by turning the adjustment screw of the capacitor of servo drive. Mechanical connection between the capacitor and the servodrive, difficulty of controlling and precise adjustment of the necessary capacitance, significant size and weight of the system inhibit the development of efficient radio devices that meet the current requirements in terms of adjustment precision and concordance between radio devices, quick operation start, powerful control of the capacitance etc. The development of a capacitor with digital control might solve the above-mentioned problems of regulating the capacitance and allow to increase the strategical and technical characteristics of radio equipment. Development of a digitally controlled capacitor is an urgent problem the solution of which presents a research novelty.

Problem

Vaccum capacitors with variable capacitance found wide application in radio devices of long-wave, medium-wave and short-wave bands, in various powerful high-frequency generators, in VHF radio location systems etc.
Adjusting the capacitance of current capacitors is performed by turning the adjustment screw of the capacitor by servo drive. Mechanical connection between the capacitor and the servo drive, difficulty in precise adjustment of the necessary capacitance, significant size and weight of the system capacitor-servo drive hinder the development of efficient radio devices, meet the current requirements in terms of adjustment precision and concordance of radio devices network, quick operation start, powerful control of the capacitance etc.
Development of digitally controlled capacitor might solve the above-mentioned projects of regulating the capacitance and allow to increase the strategic and technical characteristics of radio equipment.

Research Originality

The R&D project will allow to create a basic prototype of new generation vacuum capacitors. The use of capacitor with digital control of the capacitance will allow to automate the system of control of radio devices, simplify the actuating system, lower the weight and size of the system, increase the strategic and technical parameters of the equipment. The defined problem can be solved and the planned outcomes can be obtained due to the fact that the research team members have wide experience in the field of vacuum capacitors development, possess some of the necessary equipment and the conditions for conducting research.

Expected outcomes and their importance

Development of digitally controlled capacitor with the capacitance for the current 20-35 А, voltage  5 - 10 кВ,  capacitance adjustment range 15 - 500 pF. The R&D project will allow to create a basic prototype of new generation vacuum corresponding the international standards.

Sphere of application

The results of the R&D project are supposed to be applied in Penza R&D company  ‘Research and Development Institute of Electronic Equipment’.
