The Department of Medical Cybernetics and Informatics, previously known as the Department of Medical Devices and Equipment, was founded in 2002. From 2005 to 2010 it was the structural unit of the Faculty of Instrument Engineering and Information Technology. Due to the launch of the new Specialist’s degree programme, namely Medical Cybernetics, the department was renamed.

Thanks to the activity of the department, the students explore such areas as medical cybernetics, bioengineering and medical engineering. The department participates in implementing other Specialist’s degree programmes, in particular General Medicine, Paediatrics, Dentistry, Pharmacy, as well as postgraduate programmes in fundamental medicine and clinical residency programme in epidemiology. In addition, the lifelong learning programmes “Repair and Maintenance of Medical Equipment” and “Repair of Medical Equipment” are offered.

The student research team on medical information systems and technologies has been actively operating since 2010. It focuses on promoting project and innovation skills among the students. The team members show good results in competitions for grants and applications for intellectual property protection as co-authors together with research supervisors. The students make their contribution to research and development of a device for sanitation of the wound, a mechanical blood pressure sensor, a complex for daily monitoring of hemodynamic parameters of the human cardiovascular system and many other devices.

The students of the Department of Medical Cybernetics take an active part in the All-Russian public movement of volunteers in the field of healthcare “Volunteering medical professionals”, where they provide all possible assistance to medical workers and local residents in the Penza Region.
