Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry
Since 2003 the Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry has been accomplishing the mission of higher medical education and contributing to training of professionals for healthcare. Recently, the clinical base of the department has significantly expanded and included N.N. Burdenko Penza Region Clinical Hospital, K.R. Evgrafov Penza Region Psychiatric Hospital and Clinical Hospital “Russian Railways Medicine”.
The students completing the Specialist’s degree programmes (General Medicine, Paediatrics, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medical Cybernetics) and clinical residency programmes (Neurology, Psychiatry, Psychiatry and Narcology) are part of the department community. In addition, several lifelong learning programmes (namely Psychotherapy; Psychiatry and Narcology; Clinical Picture, Diagnosis and Treatment of Neurological Diseases; Clinical Suicidology; Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse; Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; Rehabilitation of Patients with Movement Disorders; Cognitive and Affective Disorders in General Medicine) are offered at the department.
The teaching staff vigorously conduct research, which has led to numerous achievements (7 patents received, 2 software programmes designed, 3 databases registered, 20 teaching aids published, over 400 scientific papers released). Every year the department organises scientific events, which involve leading experts in neurology and psychiatry within and across the Russian Federation. The list of events includes the conferences “Innovations in Diagnosis and Treatment of Patients with Neurological Diseases. From Science to Practice”, “Related Issues of Cardiology, Psychoneurology and Endocrinology” and “Modern Technologies in Diagnosis, Therapy and Rehabilitation of Mental and Neurological Diseases”.
The Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry runs two student research teams on neurology and on psychiatry. The meetings of the team are held monthly to consider topical issues in neurology and psychiatry, to analyse clinical cases and to examine patients. Following these meeting, the students participate in university, regional and international scientific conferences and forums.
