Department of Foreign Languages and Professional Communication
The Department of Foreign Languages and Professional Communication originated in 2001 as a result of dividing the Department of Foreign Languages, which dates back to 1943 when it was a part of Odessa Industrial Institute. In the 20th century, staff of the department laid the solid foundation for its academic advancement and creative development. In 2024, it was enlarged through uniting with the Department of Romano-Germanic Languages. Nowadays, it consists of 31 teaching staff members (including 1 doctor of sciences and 8 candidate of sciences).
The structural unit of the university prioritises teaching English to students in accordance with the modern Russian and international standards with the inclusion of vigorous guiding and social engagement, as well as research activity in the following study areas: English-speaking countries culture as an aspect of teaching English, Images in mass media, Political discourse, Legal communication, Language of mass media, etc.
The major teaching activity of the department is delivering English, French and German classes to students, who master law, computer engineering, management, electronics, tourism, power engineering and other study areas at the Polytechnic Institute, Institute of Economics and Administration and Institute of Law. In addition, teaching staff annually supervise postgraduate students and coordinate their theses defence. Since 2013, the department has been operating the postgraduate programme in Theory of Language. Staff of the department are represented in the expert commission for the Unified State Exam in the English language. They also offer intensive English courses, business English courses, specialised English courses, as well as courses within the Presidential programme for senior executives in national economy of the Russian Federation.
Extracurricular activities of the department are variable, including overseeing the Colloquial Speech Club, organising olympiads, quiz games and competitions, and arranging role-playing games. Students express enthusiasm in learning English and regularly present their projects, thus upgrading English language skills, boosting personal creativity, and increasing leadership skills.
Research interests of staff lie in several focus areas. The efficacy and efficiency of their work are evidenced by defending theses, publishing monographs, producing papers for peer reviewed scientific publications in Russia and abroad. Teaching staff actively participate in national and international research conferences on the issues of modern teaching and linguistics.
