Department of Human Anatomy

The Department of Human Anatomy, previously known as the Department of General and Regional Anatomy, was established in 1999. The original venue for the department was the Pathoanatomical Division of N.N. Burdenko Penza Region Clinical Hospital, while now it is located in the main building of the Medical Institute. Currently, the department has specialised classrooms, storage facilities for anatomical preparations, a histological laboratory and an anatomy museum.

The teaching staff teaches biomedical disciplines for the students in the following study fields: General Medicine, Dentistry, Paediatrics and Medical Cybernetics. The educational process is provided with natural wet and dry anatomical preparations, dummies, visual aids and radiographs.

The educational anatomy museum created at the department is constantly updated. Currently, the museum has more than 400 natural anatomical preparations made by the teaching staff members and students of the department. The exhibits of the museum illustrate the main sections of human anatomy, namely osteology, arthrology, splanchnology, angiology, neurology, ontogeny of the organs and systems.

The department actively operates the student research team “Human Anatomy”. The major scientific areas of activity are as follows: medical anthropology, historical anthropology, paleopathology, macro- and micromorphology of the thyroid gland, morphology and application of xeno-materials. The best research projects of the students are presented at the scientific events organised at the university, regional and national levels (including Lebedev Readings, Conference in memory of academician N.N. Burdenko “Topical Issues of Modern Healthcare”, National Congress on Regenerative Medicine and others).

In addition to the educational process, the teaching staff prioritises research and work within several areas (macro- and micromorphology of the peripheral nervous and vascular systems, medical anthropology, macro- and micromorphology of the thyroid gland, development of an automated control system for treating stenosis by balloon dilation). The teaching staff members defend dissertations within the focus areas, write teaching aids and monographs to complement the educational process, obtain patents and certificates for their findings and innovations, as well as initiate research projects within the grant programmes (e.g. Fund for the Development of Small Enterprises in Science and Technology).
