The VIII annual traditional belt wrestling tournament "Kuresh" was held at PSU
The traditional belt wrestling tournament "Kuresh" among international students was held at Penza State University. The tournament was organized by the Student Affair Department of the International Education Office, Institute of International Cooperation, PSU; the Institute of Sport and Physical Training, PSU; the International Students Association of the Penza Region.
In 2025, the tournament was held for the eighth time. More than two dozen international students representing the CIS countries, where this type of martial arts is especially revered, took part in it. The competitions took place on March 14 in the sports gymnastics hall of the Institute of Sport and Physical Training, PSU.
Kuresh is a traditional form of wrestling among the Turkic peoples and is an important element of national holidays. In 2016, UNESCO, noting the influence on strengthening relations between communities based on the principles of tolerance, goodwill and solidarity, included "Kuresh" in the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The belt wrestling tournament among PSU international and Russian students is held with the aim of adapting and socializing international students and strengthening friendly ties between students of different countries studying at the university.
The honorary guests of the tournament were Gleb Sintsov, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of PSU, Yuri Tikhonov, Director of Institute of Sport and Physical Training, PSU, and Adel Maqbol, Chairperson of the International Students Association of the Penza Region.
The panel of judges was headed by Aleksandr Sobolev, training master of the Institute of Sport and Physical Training, PSU.
The "Kuresh" tournament is traditionally held on the eve of the national holiday "Nowruz", which will take place on March 18 in the assembly hall of PSU Building 11. It is there that the award ceremony for the winners and prize-winners of the tournament will take place.
