DESCRIPTION
The clinical residency programme qualifies high-skill ophthalmologists who are capable and ready for independent professional activity in the field of ophthalmology in the current context. Programme graduates gain useful professional competences, which are required by public health institutions.
Forms of in-class activity: lectures, laboratory classes, practical classes, industry-focused training.
AIMS
• exploring the fundamentals of public health care, documents regulating health care institutions activity, principles of providing specialised treatment for patients with various diseases and traumas of organs of the visual system;
• extending general and professional medical knowledge, which are required by ophthalmologists to address various medical problems;
• advancing professional qualification of ophthalmologists, who are distinguished by medical judgment, awareness of the normal and the pathological, and profound knowledge of allied disciplines;
• developing ophthalmologists’ skills and abilities to apply up-to-date techniques and methods within their areas of expertise;
• training specialists in all kinds of independent professional activity in the field of ophthalmology;
• acquiring and broadening general and professional knowledge and skills, which foster ophthalmologists’ awareness in public health management, healthcare economics, insurance medicine, and medical psychology.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the clinical residency programme the graduates should be able to:
within prevention activity:
• implement a set of activities aimed at maintaining and improving health, adopting healthy lifestyle, preventing emergence and (or) spread of diseases, their early diagnosis, identifying causes and conditions for their emergence and development, as well as reducing negative impact of environmental factors on human health;
• conduct preventive medical examinations, annual health assessments, and follow-up monitoring of healthy individuals and long-term care patients;
• undertake anti-epidemic activities, organise protection of the population in the centres of highly infectious diseases or in case of aggravating radiation situation, natural disasters and other emergency situations;
• apply social and hygienic methods of collecting and analysing medical and statistical health indicators among adults and adolescents;
within diagnosis activity:
• identify pathological conditions, symptoms, syndromes, and nosological forms of diseases in patients in accordance with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems;
within treatment activity:
• treat patients seeking ophthalmological medical assistance;
• organise and manage medical treatment in emergency situations, including medical evacuation;
within after-treatment activity:
• apply drug and drug-free therapy and consider natural therapeutic factors in treating patients seeking after-treatment and health resort treatment;
within psychological and teaching activity:
• generate motivation in the population, patients and their family members, which is aimed at maintaining and improving their own health and health of those around them;
within management activity:
• organise and manage medical treatment and ophthalmological care in medical institutions and their structural units;
• participate in assessing the quality of health care by using the basic medical and statistical indicators.
