DESCRIPTION

 

The Specialist’s degree programme qualifies high-skill general paediatricians who have obtained professional competences associated with diagnosing and treating children and adolescents with various disorders and diseases, as well as values related to moral and ethics. The programme is aimed at acquiring profound theoretical knowledge and broadening skills required in the field of paediatrics.

Forms of in-class activity: lectures, laboratory classes, practical classes, review sessions, and individual work.

 

AIMS

 

medical activity:
•    preventing disorders and diseases among the population through preventive and anti-epidemic activities;
•    conducting preventive medical examinations, annual health assessments, and follow-up monitoring of children and adolescents;
•    collecting and analysing medical and statistical health indicators among children and adolescents of different age and gender groups, which characterise their health status;
•    diagnosing disorders, diseases and pathological conditions of children and adolescents;
•    diagnosing medical emergencies;
•    diagnosing pregnancy;
•    performing examinations of temporary disability and conducting other medical expert studies;
•    providing preliminary health care for children and adolescents in outpatient settings and day-care facilities;
•    providing preliminary health care for children and adolescents in case of sudden acute diseases, chronic diseases exacerbation not endangering lives of patients and not requiring emergency medical assistance;
•    providing emergency medical assistance for children and adolescents in cases requiring urgent medical intervention;
•    organising and providing medical treatment in emergency situations, including medical evacuation;
•    carrying out medical rehabilitation and providing health resort treatment for children and adolescents;
•    generating motivation in children and adolescents, their parent or legal guardians, which is aimed at maintaining and improving their own health and health of those around them;
•    training patients in key hygienic and health-related activities preventing diseases and promoting better health;

management activity:
•    organising and managing medical treatment of children and adolescents in medical institutions and their structural units;
•    creating immaculate living conditions for children and adolescents, their parent or legal guardians and favourable working conditions for medical staff in medical institutions and their structural units;
•    producing accounting and supporting documents;
•    arranging and conducting medical expert reviews of children and adolescents;
•    assessing the quality of medical treatment for children and adolescents;
•    complying with the key requirements on information security;

research activity:   
•    addressing research and applied scientific challenges in health care concerning diagnosis, treatment, medical rehabilitation and prevention;
•    analysing scientific literature and official statistical reviews;
•    conducting statistical analysis and presenting the results obtained.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:

•    implement a set of activities aimed at maintaining and improving children and adolescents health, adopting healthy lifestyle, preventing emergence and (or) spread of diseases, their early diagnosis, identifying causes and conditions for their emergence and development, as well as reducing negative impact of environmental factors on human health;
•    conduct preventive medical examinations, annual health assessments, and follow-up monitoring of healthy children and adolescents and long-term care patients with various diseases;
•    collect and analyse patient’s complaints, his/her past medical history, results of his/her medical examination, laboratory, instrumental, post-mortem and other studies for recognizing the condition or establishing presence or absence of a disease;
•    determine pathological conditions, symptoms, syndromes of various diseases in patients in accordance with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems;
•    treat patients seeking medical care;
•    provide preliminary health care for children and adolescents in case of sudden acute diseases, chronic diseases exacerbation not endangering the lives of patients and not requiring emergency medical assistance;
•    provide emergency medical assistance in cases requiring urgent medical intervention;
•    apply drug and drug-free therapy and consider natural therapeutic factors in treating patients seeking after-treatment and health resort treatment;
•    promote a range of activities aimed at maintaining and improving health of children and adolescents, their parent or legal guardians, including adopting healthy lifestyle, preventing emergence and spread of diseases, their diagnosis and treatment;
•    participate in assessing the quality of health care for children and adolescents by using basic medical and statistical indicators;
•    organise and manage medical and dental treatment in emergency situations, including medical evacuation.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

 

Graduates are employed as general paediatricians in medical treatment and preventive care institutions. Some graduates may enrol on postgraduate or clinical residency programmes after successful completion of the Specialist’s degree programme.
