DESCRIPTION
The main objective of the programme is to prepare a bachelor in the field of materials science and technology of materials, capable of making rational choice of materials in accordance with the given conditions of operation of products, to research and develop new materials and compositions, to design technological processes of production, processing and recycling of materials.
AIMS
technological activity:
• producing materials with set technological and functional properties;
• organising workplaces, their technical tooling, maintenance and diagnostics of technological equipment;
• conducting technical and economic analysis of alternative technological variants, organising technological processes of producing, processing and recycling materials, assessment, and quality control of products, and assessing economic viability of technological processes;
• preparing specifications for developing design materials-science and (or) technological solutions, conducting patent research in order to ensure the patent purity of new solutions and indicators for the technical level of materials, products and processes under development;
• certifying materials, semi-finished products, and technological processes of producing and processing them;
• investigating defect causes in production and developing proposals to prevent and eliminate them, developing measures for the complex use of raw materials, replacement of deficient materials, finding the ways of disposing of production waste, selecting the systems of ensuring technological and environmental safety at the enterprise;
• designing technological processes for producing, processing and recycling materials, plants and devices, as well as the technological tooling for these processes, including with the use of automated design systems;
• conducting complex technological and design calculations using software programmes, conducting innovative metal-science and technological projects, assessing the risks of innovation during the project realisation and the introduction of new technologies, and participating in the work of a multidisciplinary group of specialists when developing complex projects;
• developing methodical and regulatory documents, technical documentation, as well as proposals and measures for the realisation of developed projects and programmes.
organisation and management activity:
• organising and managing the work of a primary production, project or research unit, promptly planning the work of its personnel and wage funds, analysing expenses and activity results of the unit, and making scientific, technical, and management solutions on the unit’s activities;
• managing technological processes in accordance with job duties and ensuring technical and environmental safety in the section of professional activities;
• organising the unit’s work in improving, modernising, and unifying products and their elements and in developing the projects of standards and certificates, conducting the certification of processes, equipment, and materials, and participating in measures for creating a quality control system;
• organising the work of an executive team, unit or group, making executive decisions under conditions of opinion variability, defining the order of work execution, and organising qualification promotion for unit’s workers in the field of innovation activities;
• ensuring relations (as a representative of a workshop, department, laboratory or enterprise) with applicants for a particular production, research or scientific technical programme (project) and other enterprise departments or other enterprises;
• searching for optimal solutions when creating a product, taking into account requirements for quality, reliability and cost, as well as the terms of execution, life safety and environmental purity;
• preventing occupational injuries, occupational diseases, and environmental violations within the unit;
• organising author’s supervision during the production, installation, adjustment, testing, and commissioning of products and objects;
• conducting marketing research, preparing business plans for the release of competitive products and technologies, and developing plans and programmes for organising innovation activities.
research activity:
• conducting the collection and comparative analysis of data on existing material types, grades, structures, and properties, as well as methods of developing new materials with set technological and functional properties with respect to solving set tasks with the use of databases and literary sources;
• participating in the organisation and execution of projects, research and development of new materials and compositions, scientific and applied experiments on creating new processes of obtaining and processing materials and products;
• developing programmes, working plans and methods, organising and conducting experiments, research and material testing, processing and analysing their results in order to develop technological recommendations for implementing processes into production, preparing separate tasks for executors;
• preparing scientific technical reports, overviews, publications on the research results based on the analysis and systematisation of scientific, technical, and patent information related to the research topic, as well as review and conclusions on the project, including standards;
• modelling materials and processes, conducting research and experimental examination of theoretical data when developing new technological processes of production and material processing;
• analysing, substantiating and executing technical projects for the rational choice of materials in accordance with the set conditions for designing products, technological processes of production, processing and recycling materials, non-standard means for testing materials and semi-finished and finished products.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
• analyse, select and develop standard and innovative means of processing and obtaining metallic and non-metallic materials for parts of machines, devices, and instruments based on their operating conditions;
• develop an integrated information model for technological processes in the field of materials science and materials technology;
• define the compliance of a finished product with the claimed consumer characteristics, forecast and describe the process of achieving a set level of material properties;
• organise and implement the management of the production process in the field of materials science and materials technologies;
• theoretically substantiate and optimise technological processes of obtaining prospective materials and manufacturing new products from them.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
A graduate who has successfully mastered the programme is able to carry out professional activities in the field of thermal production, research and development; development, maintenance and integration of technological processes and productions in the field of materials science and technology, and hold positions, corresponding to the 7th qualification level of the professional standard: senior engineer, engineer of the first category, head of department, etc.
