DESCRIPTION

The aim of the programme is the training of highly qualified specialists with creative thinking in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics, oriented to successful professional activity, being competitive specialists on the labour market, taking into account professional needs in the field of research of molecular and structural organisation of living systems and genetic regularities of their existence, use of biological systems for economic and medical purposes, nature protection, able to use modern information technology for processing the results of conducted research, capable and ready for innovative development of scientific institutions and individual organisations.

AIMS

research activity:
•    implementing research activity;
•    preparing objects and mastering research methods;
•    conducting laboratory biological research on a given topic with the choice of working methods;
•    selecting technical means and methods of work, working on experimental installations, preparing equipment;
•    analysing the obtained field and laboratory biological information with the use of modern computer technology;
•    compiling scientific reports and bibliographies on a given topic;
•    developing new methodological approaches;
•    preparing scientific reports, reviews, publications, patents, organising conferences.

project activity:
•    carrying out research and development activity;
•    performing standard operations on high-tech equipment;
•    drawing up protocols of monitoring studies of biological objects, reports on the work performed according to the specified form.

organisational and management activity:
•    planning and organising research work to solve specific profile laboratory or research problems;
•    drafting primary instructions for working with high-tech equipment;
•    planning material and technical support for research and monitoring work.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
•    apply knowledge of biodiversity and use methods of observation, identification, classification, reproduction and cultivation of living objects to solve professional tasks;
•    apply the principles of structural and functional organisation, to use physiological, cytological, biochemical, biophysical methods of analysis to assess and correct the condition of living objects and monitor their habitat;
•    apply knowledge of the basics of evolutionary theory, use modern ideas about the structural and functional organisation of the genetic program of living objects and methods of molecular biology, genetics and developmental biology to study mechanisms of ontogenesis and phylogenesis in professional activity;
•    take measures for protecting, using, monitoring and restoring biological resources, to use knowledge of the laws and methods of general and applied ecology;
•    apply modern ideas about the basics of biotechnological and biomedical production, genetic engineering, nanobiotechnology, molecular modelling in professional activity;
•    use basic laws of physics, chemistry, earth sciences and biology in professional activity, apply methods of mathematical analysis and modelling, theoretical and experimental research, acquire new mathematical and natural science knowledge using modern educational and information technology;
•    use methods of collecting, processing, systematizing and presenting field and laboratory data, work with modern equipment to and analyse the results obtained;
•    organise the work of a small labour team on solving current tasks of research and development while ensuring safe working conditions;
•    organise logistical support for research and development.
