AIMS

 

• developing knowledge of grammatical norms of the foreign language;
• teaching students to apply these norms in practice;
• comparing grammatical phenomena of the native and foreign languages.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

On successful completion of this course of study students should be able to:
• show awareness of the grammatical structure of the foreign language;
• analyse grammatical phenomena of the native and foreign languages;
• apply grammatical forms and structures correctly in speaking and writing to achieve communicative purposes;
• demonstrate a grasp of grammatical norms and deviation from norms according to communication situations (formal and informal styles);

 

CONTENT

 

Non-finite verb forms. Infinitive. Gerund. Present and past participles.

Verb tense. Formation, meaning and usage of tense forms in the indicative mood.

Verb aspect. Ways of expressing apect meanings of the verb: lexical, syntactical, tense.

Voice as a verb category expressing subject-object relations in a sentence. Active and passive voice. Passive voice system: formation, meaning and usage. Action passive and state passive.

Mood as a verb category expressing the speaker’s attitude to the real life. The indicative mood. The Imperative Mood. The subjunctive mood.

The noun. General characteristic of the noun. Formal features of nouns: gender, number, case, word-building elements.

Masculine, feminine and neutral gender of a noun.

The category of number: singular and plural. Plural formation.

The category of case. Noun order.

Kinds of cases, their meaning, usage and formation.

The use of definite and indefinite articles with different types of nouns.
