Department of Surgery
The history of the Department of Surgery begins in 2001 under the auspices of N.N. Burdenko Penza Region Clinical Hospital. The establishment of mutual work between the Department of Surgery and the Department of Emergency Surgery was complex and multifaceted. The teaching staff carried out not only learning and teaching activity, but also provided medical services. Even the firstly enrolled students took part in emergency attendance in the hospital and assisted in medical operations. Thus, the medical, learning and teaching activities were integrated.
The department covers a wide range of study areas, including topographic anatomy, operative surgery, general surgery, radiation diagnostics and , which are delivered within the Specialist’s degree programmes (General Medicine, Medical Cybernetics, Paediatrics) and clinical residency programmes (Cardiovascular Surgery, Oncology, Surgery, Urology). The department runs the postgraduate programme in clinical medicine.
The student research team “Surgery” operates on the basis of the Simulation Centre of Penza State University and uses the clinical base of N.N. Burdenko Penza Region Clinical Hospital. Any student, teaching, research and medical staff member can attend the meetings of the team to learn new facts and to share knowledge with peers and colleagues. The active participants write scientific articles and deliver multimedia presentations at various conferences and forums. Every year, the teaching staff train the participants of the team to compete in the Volga Federal District Olympiad in surgery.
Research and development are on the rise at the Department of Surgery thanks to the activity of its staff. Significant contributions have been made in studying the possibilities of implanting new synthetic and biological materials in surgery, in conducting minimally invasive interventions in emergency surgery, in exploring the dynamics of inflammatory and destructive processes in closed body cavities, in using artificial materials to treat patients with surgical pathology. The department innovations have been supported by the Grant of the President of the Russian Federation, Bortnik Foundation, Russian Foundation for Basic Research and others and have been recognised at the international fairs, salons and symposia (e.g. Moscow International Salon of Innovations and Investments).
