Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics, Military and Emergency Medicine
In 2003 the Department of Traumatology, Orthopaedics, Military and Emergency Medicine was founded at the clinical base of the department of traumatology in N.N. Burdenko Penza Region Clinical Hospital. The department is responsible for teaching disciplines on traumatology, orthopaedics and emergency medicine to the students completing the Specialist’s degree programmes (Dentistry, General Medicine, Medical Cybernetics, Paediatrics and Pharmacy). It also offers clinical residency and postgraduate programmes in the areas of traumatology and orthopaedics.
Research activity at the department is of applied nature. Together with the students the teaching staff explore such areas as implantation of new synthetic and biological materials in traumatology and orthopaedics, development of biocompatible materials for medical purposes, creating and applying xenomaterials, new methods of coating human joint endoprostheses with effective bone bio-integration. Over the years, more than 100 printed works have been released, including monographs, teaching aids and papers in journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. In addition, 8 patents for inventions and 7 rationalisation proposals have been received.
Following their research activity, the teaching staff and students deliver the reports on their findings at various events, including All-Russian Congress of Traumatologists and Orthopaedists, conference “Diagnosis and Treatment of Injuries and Diseases of the Hip Joint in Children and Adults”, congress “Medical Care for Injuries: New Technologies” and many others.
In addition, the Department of Traumatology, Orthopaedics, Military and Emergency Medicine organises the Olympiad on Traumatology and Orthopaedics among the students. The event is held at the Simulation Centre of Penza State University. The event participants commonly answer theoretical questions, make a diagnosis using a radiograph and demonstrate practical skills, namely immobilising an open fracture of the forearm (as an emergency doctor) and repositioning a fracture of the radius in a typical location (as a trauma centre doctor).
The teaching staff and students of the department actively provide medical and advisory assistance to the population in clinics and hospitals of the Penza Region. Every year, they operate more than 300 patients with various pathologies, including those under the national priority project “Health”.
