AIMS
• developing pronunciation skills necessary for professional communication
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this course of study students should be able to:
• develop pronunciation skills;
• analyse and contrast phonetic phenomena of the native and foreign languages;
• demonstrate a grasp of pronunciation norms, accent rules, and intonation of the foreign language; literary norm and deviation from it;
• apply theoretical knowledge while reading and speaking, and also while teaching children at school.
CONTENT
Phonostylistics.
Expressive use of intonation. Phonetic synonymy, euphony, sound symbolism.
Phonetic norm and speech behavior. Stylistic differentiation of English pronunciation. Phonostylistic aspect of speech. Extralinguistic factors: communication objective, social conditions, status and personality of the speaker, his attitude to what he is speaking.
Typology of speech. Typological variations of texts in accordance with communication form (monologue, dialogue, polylogue); number of communicators; communication style (formal, informal).
Phonetic means of stylistic figures of speech: irony, repetition, climax, inversion, polysyndeton, etc.
Phonetic means of genre differentiation: fairy-tales, political declamation, prose. Phonetic styles: segment and supersegment.
Complete and incomplete pronunciation styles. Segment phonostylistics: modification of speech sounds caused by extralinguistic factors, modification of word accent and intonation. Norms and variations of pronunciation.
Intonation patterns of different communication styles: information, academic (scientific), declamatory, journalistic, conversational style.
