AIMS

 

• developing a concept of vocabulary of the language as of the system, ways of its development, enrichment and functioning;
• advancing theoretical and practical skills of word and collocation and semantic analysis.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

On successful completion of this course of study, students should be able to:
• know theoretical basics of lexicology;
• analyse and classify the lexical units of the language;
• work with monolingual and bilingual dictionaries and references;
• use appropriate linguistic means to achieve communicative goals;
• apply the skills of acquiring, storing and processing information.

 

CONTENT

 

Introduction to lexicology as a linguistic subject.
General, specific, historical, applied, comparative lexicology. Main concepts and categories of lexicology. Synchrony and diachrony. Theoretical and practical meaning of lexicology.

Etymological description of the vocabulary of the language.
Etymological basis of vocabulary. Native and borrowed vocabulary. Attributes of the native vocabulary as historical basis of the vocabulary. Linguistic borrowings.

The morphological structure of the word.
Morpheme. Types of morphemes. Structural types of words. Analyses of the morphological structure of the word. Derivation.

Word-formation.
Affixation, conversion, compounding, abbreviation of words and word combinations. Other word-formations.

Word meaning. Semantic structure of words. Changes in the semantic structure of words.
Lexical and grammatical word meaning. Development of the semantic structure of words. Semantic processes and types of logical associations. Extension and narrowing of the word meaning. Polysemy.

Synonyms and antonyms in the language.
Types of synonyms. Origins of synonyms. Antonymy and its logical basis. Classification of antonyms.

Homonyms in the lexical system of the language.
Lexical homonymy. Classification of homonyms. Differentiation of polysemy and homonymy.

Lexical combinability.
Types of word combinations. Norms of combinability in the language. Lexical and structural meaning of free collocations.

Phrasing.
Main differences between free collocations and phraseological units. Criteria, classifications and structural types of phraseological units. Proverbs. Sources of phraseological units.

Stylistic differentiation of the vocabulary.
Neutral style and lexis. Conversational style and lexis. Slang. Poetic lexis. Neologisms Nonce words. Archaisms. Historicisms

Variants and idioms of the language.
Vocabulary, word-formation, orthography, grammar and phonetics. Local dialects.

Basics of lexicography.
Classification and types of dictionaries. The construction of the dictionary entry. Marker system.
