AIMS

• developing the idea of the grammatical structure of the foreign language, build understanding of how the units and means of this system function;
• advancing skills of analysing, comparing, summarising, expressing the idea in the foreign language, using scientific terms and concepts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course of study students should be able to:
• be aware of the grammatical structure of the modern foreign language, its structure; methods of grammatical analysis;
• have a comprehensive knowledge of types of sentences, text cohesion;
• do morphological and syntactic analysis of linguistic material;
• compare and contrast the main concepts of different grammatical phenomena;
• apply the knowledge in writing and speaking to achieve communicative objectives; use linguistic and contextual guess;
• use reference literature for acquiring information on grammatical phenomena.

CONTENT

Introduction into theoretical grammar of the language.
Objectives of the subject. Definitions of grammar, concepts of system, structure, norm, usage applied to grammar. The main units of the grammatical system of a language: morpheme, word, part of sentence, word combination, sentence. Methods of grammatical analysis. The main stages of developing theoretical grammar.

Morphology.
Morphology as a grammatical study of a word, its parts, parts of speech and their grammatical categories. The main units of morphology: morpheme and word. Syntactic and analytical methods of expressing grammatical meanings. Analytism of the language. Parts of speech as grammatical word classes. Properties of parts of speech: semantic, morphological, and syntactic. Problem of parts of speech in grammar. System of parts of speech in the language. Criteria for identifying parts of speech.

The noun. General characteristic of the noun as a part of speech. Semantics of a noun, lexical and semantic subclasses of nouns. The problem of determination expressed by the article. Syntactic functions of a noun. Grammatical categories of a noun.

The adjective. General semantic, morphological and syntactic characteristics of the adjective as a part of speech. Grammatical categories of adjectives. Lexical and grammatical groups of adjectives. Syntactic functions of adjectives.

The verb. Characteristic of the verb as a part of speech. Semantic and grammatical groups of verbs. Auxiliary and main verbs. The category of mood. Different systems of verb moods. The category of tense and aspect. The category of tense in the indicative system. Different theoretical concepts of grammar tense system. The category of person, number and gender, characteristics of their expression in the language. The category of voice. Different theories of voice in grammar. The problem of the passive voice.

The pronoun. Characteristics of the pronoun as a part of speech. Semantic, morphological and syntactic characteristics of pronouns. The problems of pronouns in grammar.

Characteristics of unchangeable parts of speech in the language (the adverb, the particle, the preposition, the conjunction, the interjection).

Syntax.
Syntax as a grammatical study about word combinations and sentences. Units of syntax: word, word combination, sentence. Syntactic means of word and sentence cohesion. Intonation as a syntactic device. Correlation of form and content in syntax. The main syntax theories in grammar. Units of syntax less than a sentence. Parts of sentence. Traditional theory of parts of sentence, its advantages and disadvantages. Main and subordinate parts of sentence. Problems of hierarchy in the subject – predicate group. Ways of expressing the subject. Semantic types of the subject. Structural types of the predicate. Subordinate parts of sentence, ways of identifying them. Word combination. Types of word combinations.

Sentence as a minimal nominative communicative unit of speech. Classification of sentences according to their structure, aim, emotional impression, and communicative structure. Structural sentence organization, its components: lexemes, auxiliaries, word order, intonation. Semantic sentence organization. Different predicative concepts. Ways of expressing predicative relations. Communicative division of a sentence, its actual segmentation. Types of communicative segmentation of a sentence.

Complex sentence. Autonomy of its components and cohesion of the whole sentence. Coordination, subordination, juxtaposition and the problem of their correlation. Complex sentence with subordinate clauses. Cohesion means between its components. Classification of subordinate clauses according to their function and cohesion means. Compound sentence. Its structural properties (conjunctions, intonation). Conjunctionless sentence. Its status in the syntactic structure. Multi component complex sentences.

Grammar of text.
Text as a linguistic unit studied by grammar. Sentence cohesion in a text and indicators of text cohesion. The problem of text segmentation.
