Aims:
• to develop the understanding of the arts and culture,
• to develop skills to disclose cultural phenomena, to relate it to an appropriate event in the native culture.

Learning outcomes:
On successful of this course of study students should be able to:
• identify major culture-specific concepts and personalia, connected with arts and culture;
• analyze and compare arts and culture of the countries with Russian realia;
• apply cultural and social information practically;
• identify and interpret cultural differences;
• use the language as a means of communication.

CONTENT

Subject matter of culture
Structure of culture. Arts in the system of culture. Content of spiritual culture. Main forms and types of culture. Types and genres of arts. Origins of arts. Main influential figures of the Renaissance.

Architecture.
Architecture as part of material and spiritual culture. Roman and Gothic architectural styles. Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Romanticism.

Music as part of arts.
Schools, directions, styles. Outstanding composers. Current music directions, bands, performers.

Painting.
Painting as kind of fine arts. Genres of painting.
Main representatives. World known picture galleries.

Theatre and cinema.
Film art. Development of cinematograph. World famous films. World famous film stars.
Theatre arts. Well-known theatres. World famous play writers, stage-directors.
