Aims:
• to form and to develop common cultural, professional and specific competences;
• to use the appropriate modern evaluation tools that provide efficiency and reliability of results assessment in foreign language teaching.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course of study, students should be able to:
• show competent knowledge of teaching methodology and techniques and the desired impact;
• know and evaluate teaching resources of the Internet and search necessary information in the Internet;
• use informational educational resources in the process for self-study;
• develop novel methods of learner assessment.

CONTENT

Education quality.
Control and management of education quality system. Indicators of education quality. Assessment as a part of quality management. Kinds, forms and organization of the control. Assessment and its functions.

Developing of testing in Russia and abroad.
Origin of testing. Founders of test movement. Development of testing in America, Europe and Russia. Recent history of testing. Testing centers.

Concept, content and classification of tests.
Pre-test tasks, test tasks, pedagogical tests. Classification of tests. Diagnostic testing. Theme tests, final assessments. The structure of the test task.

Technology of test preparation.
Stages of test development. General principles of test content selection. Major categories of learning objectives. The composition and characteristics of test tasks. Use of nonverbal materials in testing.

Quality criteria for test results.
Reliability, validity, representativeness, efficiency, rationale of the test. Examination of the quality of test tasks and tests. Expert quality report of test tasks and tests.

Computer-based testing.
Forms of computer-based testing. Main components of a computer-based test. Bank of test tasks and its structure.

Test preparation and implementation.
Standardization of conditions and materials. Test forms requirements. Testing guidelines and the procedure for its implementation. Principles of preparation for testing. Ethical and social issues of testing. Interpretation of test results.

Content and structure of Unified State Examination in the foreign language.
Unified State Examination and education quality. Unified State Examination as one of the means of improving the quality of general and teacher education. Goals, structure, objects of testing, evaluation methods, equipment and procedure.

Content and structure of international tests, requirements for preparing.
Concept “Common Reference Levels”. Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Content, structure and preparing to the international tests: English (TOEFL, IELTS), German (DaF, DSH, Goethe-Institut), French (DELF, DALF).
