Aims:
• to develop knowledge and appreciation of antique culture;
• to teach core theoretical and basic practical skills in understanding Latin;
• to form the skills of analytial comparison between fundamendatlly opposed languages: classic and modern.

Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this course of study students should be able to:
• evaluate and express attitude to the growth and expansion of classical antique culture;
• explain and discuss the influence of the Classics on European culture, society and languages;
• compare and contrast phonetic, lexical and grammatical attributes of Latin and Russian;
• demonstrate understanding of Latin morphology and syntax;
• translate simple texts from Latin into Russian using glossaries, interpret and comment on them.

CONTENT

History of Latin. Periods and characteristics. Influence of Latin on other languages.

Introduction to Classical Antiquity. Classical heritage. Material culture.

Elementary Latin. Noun categories, declensions. Verb categories, conjugation types, voice and tense systems. Prepositions and cases. Sentax. Sentence word order. Supine. Infinitive and participial constructions.

Antique cuture. Classical mythology. Society, family in Ancient Rome. State and politics in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Religion, arts, education in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Science. System of measurements, calendar, money. Public offices. Social stratification in Antique world.

Introduction to Latin literature, drama and poetry. Oustanding poets and playwrights. Roman rhetorics, poetry, philosophy. Latin texts. Latin proverbs.

New life of Latin. Medieval Latin. Secular and religious Latin. History of learning and using Latin in Russia.
