Aims:
• to develop the knowledge of grammatical norms of the foreign language;
• to teach students the application of these norms into practical usage;
• to compare grammatical phenomena of the native and foreign languages.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this course of study students should be able to:
• show awareness of the grammatical structure of the foreign language;
• analyze grammatical phenomena of the native and foreign languages;
• apply grammatical forms and structures correctly in speaking and writing to achieve communicative purposes;
• demonstrate a grasp of grammatical norms and deviation from norms according to communication situations (formal and informal styles);
CONTENT
Introduction
Grammar as a science. Grammatical structure of the language as a system of patterns which defines grammatical word forms and word cohesion into syntactical structures.
The main parts of grammar: morphology and syntax.
Morphology
Parts of speech, their forms and functions. The concept of grammatical category.
The verb. Its general characteristic. Person, number, tense, aspect, voice as formal grammatical features of a verb.
Semantic classification of verbs (auxiliaries and main verbs).
Syntactic classification of verbs.
Verb conjugation.
Subject-verb agreement
