Aims:
• to develop the knowledge of grammatical norms of the foreign language;
• to teach students the application of these norms into practical usage;
• to compare grammatical phenomena of the native and foreign languages.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this course of study students should be able to:
• show awareness of the grammatical structure of the foreign language;
• analyze grammatical phenomena of the native and foreign languages;
• apply grammatical forms and structures correctly in speaking and writing to achieve communicative purposes;
• demonstrate a grasp of grammatical norms and deviation from norms according to communication situations (formal and informal styles);
CONTENT
Noun subclasses. Proper and common names. Countable and uncountable nouns. Animate and inanimate nouns. Concrete and abstract nouns. Mass and collective nouns.
The adjective. Its general characteristic. Grammatical categories of the adjective. Classification of adjectives. Adjectival declension. Order of adjectives. Degrees of comparison of adjectives – positive, comparative and superlative degrees. Formation and meaning of degrees of comparison. Functions of adjectives in a sentence. Attributive and predicative functions. Pronominal, demonstrative and possessive adjectives.
The pronoun. Its general characteristic. Classification of pronouns. Personal, reflexive, demonstrative, possessive, indefinite, negative, interrogative, and relative pronouns. Their declension, usage, meaning and functions.
The numeral. Cardinal and ordinal numerals. Formation of ordinal numerals. Substantivisation of cardinal numerals. Articles with numerals. Fractions. Other parts of speech used to denote “number”. Syntactical functions of numerals.
