DESCRIPTION

The programme is aimed at training specialists in the sphere of international communication, translation, and foreign languages teaching.

The effectiveness of the course is based on the complementarity of theoretical and practical classes.

The course graduates are good at foreign languages, linguistics and the humanities; know the culture of other countries.

Such training provides the students with an opportunity to work in different fields.

AIMS

• To train specialists in cross-cultural communication and international communication
• To provide deep knowledge in foreign languages, linguistics, translation, international and business etiquette
• To prepare specialists in international cooperation for businesses and organizations having partnership relations with Russian-speaking countries and organizations.

LEARNER OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• Take into account the interests of different social, national, religious and professional publics in Russian society;
• Demonstrate respect and tolerance to foreign cultures and publics;
• Apply the skills of socio-cultural and cross-cultural communication to build up and maintain professional and social relationships;
• Work in a team with respect to other team members and be responsible for the environment, society and cultural heritage; organize team work;
• Apply the methods of learning and reflecting for increasing their intellectual, cultural and professional level;
• Show a critical awareness of their legal rights and responsibilities;
• Demonstrate a solid command of linguistic knowledge, including phonetic, lexical, grammatical, and word-building phenomena and patterns of functioning of the language, its functional variants;
• Show a critical awareness of ethical and moral norms of behavior in a foreign community;
• Apply discourse patterns to achieve communicative goals in different contexts (time, place, objectives, and conditions of interaction);
• Express their ideas using different linguistic devices, taking into account compositional elements of the message (introduction, body, and conclusion), super phrase units, sentences;
• Contrast formal, neutral and informal communication styles; use conversational formulae in speech and writing;
• Translate texts using the main translation techniques and reference literature to achieve equivalence;
• Demonstrate international etiquette in different communication situations (tourist groups escort, business negotiations, delegations, etc.);
• Apply the concepts of philosophy, theoretical and applied linguistics, translation science, didactics, and international communication theory to solving professional tasks;
• Integrate knowledge from different areas of professional activity; analyze and summarize information, set objectives and choose the ways of achieving them;
• Put forward ideas and arguments to support them.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The objects of professional activity are: cross-cultural communication, interlingual communication, and international relations.

The course graduates are involved in the following types of activities: practical, research, organizational.

The graduates are ready to work as teachers at secondary and high school, courses of foreign languages, and institutions of additional education; as translators in the mass media, publishing houses, sports committees; as guides and interpreters in museums and cultural centres, tourist agencies and international exhibitions and conferences; as cross-cultural communication specialists; as consulate or embassy officers.
