DESCRIPTION

 

The Bachelor’s degree programme trains specialists, who have essential language skills (Russian as a foreign language, English) to maintain interlingual mediation in the context of enhanced international cooperation.

In the course of studies, students explore modern information, multimedia and Internet technologies, which are required in professional activity. Graduates are notable for responsibility, tolerance, and aspiration to personal development.

Forms of in-class activity: lectures, laboratory classes, practical classes, review sessions, and individual work.

 

AIMS

 

linguistic and teaching activity:
•    conducting linguistic analysis of speech and written texts in any language for different purposes;
•    developing information support means required by linguistics and related areas;
•    acting as a mediator in cross-cultural communication;

methodological activity:
•    producing, introducing and maintaining electronic linguistic and information systems and electronic language sources for different purposes;

research activity:
•    testing and validating linguistic software solutions; 

management activity:
•    regulating processes on formalising and characterising linguistic data in accordance with the set objectives.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:

•    possess systematised linguistic knowledge of phonetic, lexical, grammatical, word-formation phenomena and patterns of the studied foreign language, its functional types;
•    recognise ethical and moral standards and rules of conduct adopted in the foreign cultural environment, as well as models of social situations and typical interaction scenarios;
•    integrate major discourse means of attaining communication goals with regard to the specific features of the communication context (time, place, aims and conditions of interaction);
•    contrast key methods of ensuring semantic, communicative and structural succession between the statement parts, i.e. compositional elements of the text (introduction, body, and conclusion), supra-sentential constructions, sentences;
•    distinguish formal, neutral and informal registers (or styles) and identify their peculiarities;
•    maintain cross-cultural communication in general and professional sphere;
•    challenge the influence of stereotypes and adapt to the changing conditions while dealing with foreign nationals;
•    adhere to etiquette in oral and written communication (greeting, parting, thanking, congratulating, apologising, requesting) and in various contexts of cross-cultural interaction (guiding tourists, mediating business meetings, maintaining negotiations, accompanying official delegations, etc.);
•    model possible communicative situations with the individuals with diverse cultural, religious and historical heritage;
•    operate major data retrieval systems and consulting programmes, as well as systems for knowledge representation, syntactic and morphological analysis, automated speech synthesis and recognition, processing of lexicographical information and machine translation, personal identification and verification;
•    manipulate methods of formal and cognitive modelling of natural language and methods of metalanguages creation;
•    practice mathematical and statistical methods for processing of linguistic data with the view to programming components and automated processing of linguistic corpora;
•    tackle and perform main tasks in the field of linguistic support of data and other applied systems;
•    possess computer skills in retrieving, processing and managing information;
•    operate traditional data storage devices, distributed data and knowledge bases, electronic dictionaries and other electronic sources for fulfilling linguistic tasks;
•    apply the conceptual framework of theoretical and applied linguistics, translation studies, linguodidactics and cross-cultural communication theory;
•    generalise and integrate knowledge from difference professional areas and use obtained knowledge in the creative way. 

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

 

Graduates are employed in research centres, educational institutions, editorial and information departments of various organisations, as well as linguistic examination offices and tourist agencies.
