Physics: Condensed Matter Physics
Degree: MASTER
Duration: 2 years (4 semesters)
ECTS: 120
Fields of study: Physics, Physical Systems, Physical, Engineering-physical, and Chemical-physical Technologies
Languages of instruction: Russian, English (on request)
DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the program is to prepare graduates for professional activities in the field of organising and conducting theoretical and experimental physical studies of magnetic and optical phenomena in semiconductor nanostructures with impurity centres, as well as electronic transport associated with the effect of photonic entrainment of one-dimensional and two-dimensional electrons and a quantum mechanical approach to the description of dissipative tunnel transport in low-dimensional systems, as well as the formation of general cultural skills among graduates, general professional and professional competencies, taking into account the specifics of the scientific school of the Department of Physics and the needs of the labour market for scientific personnel for scientific research institutions of the region. Graduates should also be able to integrate into the modern high-tech industrial and economic space and be ready to carry out work in their professional fields.
AIMS
teaching activity:
• developing and upgrading training courses in physical disciplines, training and methodological materials, and training manuals ensuring course implementation;
• conducting classes in physical disciplines and organising independent work of students of higher education and supplementary vocational education programmes.
research activity:
• collecting and analysing scientific and technical information on the research topic;
• developing plans and methodological programmes for conducting research and development;
• conducting research in the field of professional activities;
• analysing and theoretically generalise scientific data and experiment and observation results;
• modelling parameters for new materials and processes for the finished applied research cycle;
• processing and systemising calculation results, formalising methods for calculating parameters of nanostructured materials and internal processes.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
• apply fundamental knowledge in physics for meeting research objectives, as well as to possess the basics of pedagogy for implementing teaching activities;
• organise individual or collaborative research work in the sphere of professional activities to search, develop, and make decisions in physics;
• apply knowledge of information technologies, apply modern computer networks, software, and internet resources for solving tasks related to professional activities, including tasks that are not covered by the specialised training;
• define the sphere of research results implementation in the field of professional activities;
• conduct the development and teaching of training courses in physical disciplines for students of higher education and supplementary vocational education programmes;
• independently set research objectives in physics and achieve them based on the latest Russian and foreign experience using modern scientific equipment and information technologies;
• develop nanostructured materials and new methods based on them.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates are able to carry out professional activities in higher education institutions (bachelor's degree programme) and supplementary vocational programmes, research institutes, laboratories, design and engineering bureaus and firms, arbitrary enterprises, organisations and associations and in other areas of professional activity, provided that their level of education and acquired competencies meet the requirements for the employee's qualifications.
