Faculty of Physics and Mathematics
The present day Faculty of Physics and Mathematics is formed with core faculties of Penza State University and former Penza State Pedagogical University. Some departments have been successfully working for more than 70 years, sometimes with family generations studying at the same faculty. The faculty incorporates classical Russian school of teaching physics and mathematics, which is renowned for its solid scientific foundation and nurturing creativity. Knowledge and skills in both mathematical and physical sciences have become a prerequisite in many professional fields. Some students are attracted by the idea of a rewarding career in applied fields, others dream of fame and recognition of a fundamental scientist, daring to solve millennium prize problems.
Currently, there are 575 students at the faculty with 97 Candidates of Sciences and 12 Doctors of Sciences of the academic staff. The faculty includes 8 departments and provides training in bachelor, specialist and master programmes. There are post-graduate courses and advanced research doctorate school. The faculty today plays a critical role, it is undoubtedly a flagship of the university. It promotes fundamental research in frontier disciplines of the mathematical and physical sciences as well as in many interdisciplinary fields.
