DESCRIPTION
The programme trains Bachelor’s degree students to solve professional tasks in the field of mass media and allied information and communication fields by studying the theory, history and practice of journalism. The programme provides the development of general cultural, general professional and professional competences.
The aim of the programme is to train graduates who have fundamental knowledge in the Humanities (philosophy, linguistics, history, cultural studies), social sciences (sociology, psychology, law), economic and natural sciences, who possess general cultural and professional competences which contribute to their competitiveness at the labor market and professional mobility.
From the point of view of personal development, the aims of the programme are: developing cultural system of values, civil qualities of would-be journalists, creative abilities, communication skills, responsibility, ability to social adaptation and self-reflexion, initiative, sense of purpose in professional activity, tolerance, and the proper level of physical training.
Forms of in-class activity: lectures, laboratory classes, practical classes, review sessions, colloquiums, and students’ individual work.
AIMS
journalistic author’s activity:
• creating materials for different kinds of mass media taking into account their specific features;
editorial activity:
• making sure that the materials intended for placement in newspapers, magazines, on radio and TV, on the Internet, correspond to linguistic norms, professional standards, formats, styles, technological requirements of different mass media types;
project and analytical activity:
• making sure that the materials intended for placement in newspapers, magazines, on radio and TV, on the Internet, correspond to linguistic norms, professional standards, formats, styles, technological requirements of different mass media types;
• participating in developing and improving the media project concept, defining its format, in different kinds of programming and planning;
organization and management activity:
• organizing work of media enterprises, their departments, creative teams;
social and organization activity:
• attracting different segments of society, organizations, agencies to cooperate with mass media and other communication media and interaction with them;
production and technological activity:
• attracting different segments of society, organizations, agencies to cooperate with mass media and other communication media and interaction with them;
• participating in the production process of issuing a publication, making a TV or radio programme on the basis of modern technologies.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
• use the knowledge of the Humanities and social sciences (sociology, psychology, culture studies, etc. ) within their social and professional activity;
• demonstrate the knowledge of modern trends of media development, basic principles of media systems formation, specific features of different types of mass media, specific features of national media models and functioning of Russian mass media; the most important innovative processes in mass media sphere;
• show the understanding of the essence of journalism as a social, informational and creative profession, of its basic characteristics, the meaning of a journalist’s social roles, the personal qualities necessary for responsible performance of professional functions;
• choose relevant topics, problems for publications, use the methods of gathering, checking and analyzing information;
• prepare materials for mass media within the given budget and in particular genres, formats, with the use of different sign systems (verbal, photo, audio, video, graphic) according to the type of placement in the media;
• analyze, evaluate, and edit media texts, make sure they correspond to the norms, standards, formats, styles and technological requirements of different types of mass media;
• develop local author’s media projects, participate in developing, analyzing and correcting mass media concepts;
• participate in implementing the media project, plan work, promote media products to information market, work in a team, cooperate with technical services;
• cooperate with representatives of different segments of society; work with authors and editorial mail (traditional and electronic), organize interactive communication with the audience, using social networking sites and other modern media tools; provide public interest for publications, participate in conducting events;
• participate in the production process of issuing publications, TV and radio programmes, multimedia materials according to modern technological requirements.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The graduates are employed in editorial staff of different types of mass media (newspapers, magazines, TV, radio), information agencies, press services, press centres, etc.
