The Department of Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics is one of the youngest departments at Penza State University. It was embedded into the Faculty of Dentistry of the Medical Institute in 2020. The decision to create a specialised department for paediatric dentistry and orthodontics was supported by the Academic Council of the university.

Along with teaching the students within the Specialist’s degree programme “Dentistry” and medical residents within the clinical residency programmes “Child Dentistry”, “General Dentistry”, “Operative Dentistry” and “Orthodontics”, the teaching staff is engaged in research. The department focuses on studying and developing modern methods for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dental diseases. The research projects and publications mainly explore the prevention of caries and its complications in preschool children, the features of oral care in patients with braces and removable orthodontic appliances, as well as the value of orthopantomography at the stage of diagnosis in orthodontic treatment.

The teaching staff also supervises the student research team, which was organised at the department in 2020. The activity of the team is carried out in accordance with the study fields covered at the department, namely child dentistry, orthodontics and child prosthetics. The participating students have the opportunity to present their findings not only at the team meetings, but also at the scientific events of various levels.
