Department of Cyclic Sports

The Department of Cyclic Sports educates specialists in the field of physical training, sports and adaptive physical training, who have completed not only specialised sports disciplines, but also humanities, social, economic, natural, and mathematical ones. Its graduates are winners and prize-winners of the Olympics and other competitions, world-class athletes, and honoured trainers of the Russian Federation in various sports. The department is proud of Aleksandr Bolshunov, Anna Zherebyatyeva, Aleksey Chervotkin, Valery Gontar and many other students and alumni.

Staff of the department are represented not only by associate professors and senior lecturers, but also by highest category trainers, members of the All-Russian Coaching Council for Athletics and Cross-Country Skiing, members of the All-Russian Association of Judges in various sports, and awardees of the International Athletics Federations Association certificates.

Using modern university sports facilities (such as Delfin Swimming Pool, Trud Sport and Fitness Complex, and Skiing Centre) the department delivers academic disciplines for its Bachelor’s degree students and for other students of Penza State University and constantly update them in line with sports and physical training requirements. Such disciplines as Biomechanics and Sports Metrology are mainly based on the results of staff research. The new academic disciplines include: Youth Sports; Selecting and Forecasting in Sports; Managing Physical Capacity in Sports; Refereeing and Judging Competitions; Foreign Martial Arts; Respiratory Gymnastics; Joint Gymnastics; Rehabilitation of Disabled People through Swimming; Health-Improving Swimming, etc.

The department actively participates in the scientific life of the university, city, region and country. Within the university research-to-practice conference “Topical Issues in Science and Education” students and staff present their reports during three conference sessions: “Water sports and martial arts”, “Summer sports” and “Winter sports”.

Over the last years, staff of the department have prepared and published more than 300 academic and research works on methodological challenges, sports and training, health, and mass sports. They introduce their research results into practice (sports and training), e.g. within the scientific and methodological activity jointly with the Regional Swimming Federation they annually examine more than 350 – 370 people. In addition, the department ran the lifelong learning programme “Therapeutic physical training and sports medicine” for medical workers.
