The Department of Mathematical Support and Computer Application initially focused on applied mathematics. It has been evolving since 1974 and amending its educational programmes in line with the market requirements.

Nowadays, its graduates are ready to work in the field of information systems and technologies. They are also engaged in industrial development and production of software for computer and automated systems for various purposes.

It has created the basis for stimulating research among its staff and students, attracting them to design, engineering and management. The department initiates educational (e.g. Software Academy) and innovation (Text information search and analysis systems, Database management software in Cache system, Programme code quality management system) projects and runs internships for students at different Penza enterprises. Students annually participate in various competitions, including Interuniversity Programming Olympiad “Software Engineering Cup”.

The Department of Mathematical Support and Computer Application supervises the student research team “Modern Data Management Technologies” in conjunction with the representative office of Intersystems Corp. in Russia and the CIS countries as part of the University Outreach Programme.
