Department of Instrument Engineering

Due to the urgent need of instrument-making enterprises in the Penza Region for skilled personnel, the Department of Clock and Watch Production was founded in 1944. Currently, it is known as the Department of Instrument Engineering. Throughout its history, the department has trained and graduated more than 3000 highly qualified engineers, who are in demand in research institutes and manufacturing enterprises within and across the region. More than 200 specialists work in the field of managing, marketing and servicing at oil and gas enterprises, automobile fuel filling stations, etc.

In addition to great teaching skills, staff of the department have considerable experience in various positions in industry and research. They combine theory and practice, so that students are able to explore the structure of production, apply modern technological equipment and materials, model and design technological processes used in production. Special attention is paid to developing and manufacturing strain gauge pressure sensors, including pressure sensors based on thin-film nano- and microelectromechanical systems; designing and producing primary control elements of accelerometers; modelling and designing fibre-optic sensors of various types and purposes; manufacturing materials for medicine and other high-tech industries that meet world-class requirements.

The department is also engaged in running lifelong learning programmes for industrial personnel. These professional modules are aimed at updating knowledge, training personnel to perform new production tasks, and working ahead of schedule. Their content provides an overview of technologies for improving the quality of nuclear, transport and space systems, classes of information systems for information integration of processes, standards for integrated storing, formalised electronic description of processes in accordance with the requirements of CALS standards.

Since 2015, the department operates the shared use centre “Technological and test equipment for information and telecommunication, transport, space, nano and power industries”.
