The Department of Therapy was established at the clinical base of N.N. Burdenko Penza Region Clinical Hospital in 2001. Its teaching staff provide assistance to six hospital departments and offer methodological guidance, they are directly involved in the treatment and diagnosis process. In addition, the teaching staff of the department participate in applied research, contribute to research teams and societies on therapy and attend pathology and anatomy conferences. The department is actively working on the national project “Health” and implementing health programmes at industrial enterprises in the Penza Region.

Teaching is conducted in 34 disciplines in the area of healthcare and medicine, including within the Specialist’s degree programmes “General Medicine” and “Paediatrics”. The department graduates professionals under the Clinical residency programmes “Ultrasound Diagnosis” and “Cardiology” and the post-graduate programme “Cardiology”.

Since 2002, the student research team “Therapy” has held more than 100 meetings, thus ensuring the involvement of the students in applied and fundamental work on priority areas in medicine. Through this activity the students analyse interesting clinical cases and familiarise with various methods (e.g. 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, holter monitoring, volumetric sphygmography, cardio respiratory monitoring, ultrasound examination of the carotid arteries, echo-tracking).

The teaching staff of the department not only supervise student research, but also implement research projects. They have explored the biomechanics of the heart in healthy people and patients with acute myocardial infarction under 3D speckle echocardiography based on 3D vector analysis, determined the relations between the parameters of myocardial electrical instability and left ventricular remodelling in patients after myocardial infarction with ST segment elevation, examined the cardiovascular pathology in young people as a manifestation of early vascular aging and achieved many other significant results, some of which are proved by patents and state registration certificates.
