The Department of Computer Automated Design Systems has been operating since 1 September 1987 and training students not only in programming languages, but also in modern software products. This knowledge enables graduates to address design challenges, create animated three-dimensional graphics, and explore computer design issues for advertising and other commercial enterprises. Fundamental computer training allows CAD specialists to work in any area related to information technology.

Currently, the department has 25 staff members, 80% of them have academic degrees and ranks, including three Doctors of Engineering Sciences, Professors. In addition to specialised disciplines, the department delivers classes on information technology for other faculties of Penza State University.

The major research interests of the department are information technology with the focus on geography, synergetic processes in information systems, education (including distance education), medicine, design, monitoring, and education quality. The annual volume of funds attracted for research is about 1 million roubles. Students and staff also represent the department at various national and international conferences and competitions.

The potential of the department has significantly grown over 20 years.

•    Developing models and methods for increasing effectiveness of information security and protection of sensory data in wireless networks of SCADA systems
•    Synthesis methods for problem-oriented systems of distributed monitoring of technogenic facilities and systems in heterogeneous wireless environment
•    Heterogeneous wireless environment to support learning processes in universities and control access to information and education resources from mobile communications
