Department of Computer Engineering

The Department of Computer Engineering, previously known as the Department Counting-Solving and Analytical Machines, was established in 1947. The structural unit became one of the first departments in Russia that trained engineers in both analogue and digital computing. Throughout the years, the department has graduated more than 4000 computer engineers. Many graduates later became outstanding researchers and senior figures in industry, research and higher education.

The educational process at the department is saturated with modern approaches and tools of teaching and learning, including Internet/Intranet technologies, e-versions of textbook and study guides, etc. Laboratory activity of students is organised using the department LAN based on the multi-purpose information resource developed by the department. The methodological and software support of the educational process has been constantly upgrading.

The department particularly focuses on research. The most significant results of its department are: theory of non-deterministic automata and its application to synthesis of parallel processing systems; methods of massive computations in multiprocessor structures and environments; methods for synthesising control systems by interacting parallel processes and objects based on non-determinism concept; methods and tools for testing large and super-large capacity data storage devices; means for automated control of precision mechanics and optics products; methods for building intelligent information systems and information security systems; construction of high-precision and high-speed analogue-to-digital converters. Based on R&D results, dozens of specialised computing devices and systems for automated control and management of technological processes were developed and implemented. In addition, staff of the department designed and introduced software for systems controlling, managing and computer-aided engineering of IT facilities.

Students are actively involved in research, including within the student research society “Design of distributed computing control systems”. They explore methods of conceptual and behavioural modelling of discrete-event systems, algorithms and models of wait list scheduling in computer networks with QOS support, as well as methods for designing distributed control systems. They also ensure hardware implementation of operating systems and apply neural networks to classify binary structures.

The department maintains retraining of university staff in the Penza Region through the lifelong learning programmes “Information technology in education” and “Design of microprocessor systems”.
