At PSU scholars looked at the problem of women’s emancipation from different angles
The International Research Conference “Non-Western Models of Women’s Emancipation and Gender Discrimination” took place at the Institute of Teacher Education, PSU.
In his opening speech Sergei Vasin, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, emphasized that the theme of the conference is unique. “This theme is not only relevant, but also highly significant in the whole world. Representatives of more than 48 countries are currently studying at PSU. Being here in Russia, all students are equal. But when we go to this or that country, we see different attitude to women”.
The conference, organized by the Department “Methodology of Science, Social Theories and Technologies”, was held under the patronage and with financial support from the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.
The plenary meeting was opened by Boris Kagarlitsky, a political exert, polyglot, Director of the Institute of Globalization and Social Movements. He presented a report on the controversies in the concept of multiculturalism and perspectives in the emancipation policy.
Another plenary report, made by Andrei Myasnikov, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor at the Department “Methodology of Science, Social Theories and Technologies”, caused a lot of discussion. It was dedicated to the theme “Excessive spirituality and emancipation of the post-Soviet society”.
Then the participants considered social and philosophical aspects of emancipation and discussed the following themes: “Social and historical construct “West” and emancipation values” (the report was made by Anna Ochkina, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Head of the Department “Methodology of Science, Social Theories and Technologies”), “Globalization and gender transformations: Russia and West” (Evgeny Sinev, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department “Methodology of Science, Social Theories and Technologies”).
Within the framework of the conference, five sections worked for two days: “National models of emancipation”, “Gender relations in the context of violence”, “Socio-cultural and economic aspects of gender emancipation”, “Linguistic issues of gender emancipation”, “Religious and ethno-social aspects of women’s emancipation”.
